Fernando J. Martinez, MD, MS, is a professor of medicine; academic chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine; inaugural vice chair for clinical and translational research in the Department of Medicine; and the inaugural Joseph D. Early Chair in Biomedical Research at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School.
Dr Martinez joined the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School in July 2024 after 10 years at Weill Cornell Medical College/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and 24 years at the University of Michigan. He is an accomplished physician-scientist recognized for seminal studies on the phenotypic and functional classification of and clinical interventions in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and interstitial lung diseases. With more than 700 publications and extensive federal funding, Dr Martinez leads numerous clinical trials and serves as editor in chief of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
